Suffolk creates hotline for homeowners facing foreclosure

Suffolk County has established a new hotline connecting homeowners at risk of foreclosure with free housing counseling and legal services.

Residents can call 631-853-4663 (631-853-HOME) to get help preventing foreclosure and mitigating the effects of foreclosure court proceedings, officials said Thursday during a news conference. The announcement came from Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory (D-Amityville) and Legis. Monica Martinez (D-Brentwood).

Suffolk lawmakers to weigh legislation to protect neglected dogs

Politicians usually enact legislation that helps people who can vote for them, but on Tuesday, Suffolk lawmakers will hold a public hearing in Riverhead that is quite literally for the dogs.

Amendments sponsored by Legis. Monica Martinez (D-Brentwood) are aimed at greatly strengthening existing legislation intended to protect dogs that are kept outdoors in restraints day and night under filthy and wet conditions without water.

Arrests in Brentwood gang killings bring ‘great relief’ to hamlet

Brentwood residents have anxiously waited months for the arrests of those responsible for the shocking slayings of two high school girls so they could finally feel safe again.

On Thursday, relief swept through the community as news spread that MS-13 gang members had been indicted for three killings, including the September beating deaths of best friends Nisa Mickens, 15, and Kayla Cuevas, 16.

Officials hope the latest gang arrests mark the beginning of a healing period.

They and concerned residents vow to prevent further tragedies by continuing their push for gang-prevention programs and more resources and activities for vulnerable youths.

Shuttered LIRR overpass near Brentwood campus to be razed

The MTA plans to tear down an elevated walkway that it closed last month near an elementary and middle school in Brentwood, officials said Thursday.

The overpass — which crosses Long Island Rail Road tracks a half-mile from the Brentwood train station — is expected to be demolished by the end of the year, Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokesman Aaron Donovan said.

In September, MTA officials blocked the entrance to the walkway, which leads to the shared campus of the East Kindergarten Center and East Middle School, with chain-link fences, Donovan said.

Suffolk County Legis. Monica Martinez (D-Brentwood) and Brentwood school district Superintendent Levi McIntyre asked the MTA to remove the walkway because it attracted criminal activity, Donovan said.

Suffolk legislators boost penalty for violating social host law

Suffolk lawmakers unanimously approved a bill Tuesday night that makes it a misdemeanor for adults to allow underage drinking in their homes instead of a violation.

The amendment to the so-called social host law, sponsored by Legis. Tom Cilmi (R-Bay Shore) and Legis. Monica Martinez (D-Brentwood), would allow police to better crack down on drinking as graduation and prom season heats up, sponsors and police officials said.

Police officers currently have to witness the underage drinking because it is classified as a violation under the law, Police Commissioner Timothy Sini said.

“This will enhance our ability to enforce the social host law,” Sini said. “It sends an important message out to the community that we won’t tolerate underage drinking.”
